Almost every student eventually meets a course that feels different from everything else on the timetable. The lecturer may move quickly, the concepts may seem abstract, or the questions may require several steps before an answer becomes clear. A difficult course can easily become the subject you keep postponing until examination week.

That usually makes the problem worse.

The better approach is to stop treating difficulty as a sign that you are incapable of learning the subject. Instead, identify exactly what makes the course difficult, break the material into manageable parts, practise the right kind of questions, and deliberately return to the areas where you are still making mistakes.

This guide explains a practical system you can adapt to mathematics, sciences, accounting, economics, engineering, computer science, law, medicine, and other demanding university courses.

First, identify what “difficult” actually means

Saying “I don't understand this course” is too broad to guide your study.

Ask yourself what is actually happening.

Perhaps you understand the lecturer during class but cannot solve questions alone. Perhaps you can memorise definitions but cannot explain them. Maybe the textbook is difficult to read. Maybe you missed earlier topics and the newer material depends on them.

Write the problem down in one sentence.

For example:

“I understand the examples when the lecturer solves them, but I cannot decide which method to use when I see a new question.”

That statement is much more useful than “I am bad at statistics.”

Find the missing foundation

Many difficult university topics depend on earlier knowledge.

A student struggling with integration may actually have a problem with algebra. A student struggling with programming may be uncertain about variables, functions, or basic logic. A student struggling with accounting may not understand the relationship between the underlying concepts before attempting calculations.

Look backwards.

Write down the first topic you remember understanding confidently. Then identify the point where your understanding became uncertain.

You may discover that you do not need to relearn an entire semester. You may need to repair two or three foundations.

Start with the course outline

Use your official course outline, lecture schedule, notes, and prescribed materials to map the subject.

Then close the material.

Try to explain what you just learned without looking.

Practise retrieval

Recognition can be misleading.

You may look at a page and think, “Yes, I remember this.” But an examination normally requires you to produce the answer without the page in front of you.

After studying a section, ask yourself questions.

“What is the definition?”

“What are the steps?”

“Why does this happen?”

“When would I use this formula?”

“What changes if this condition is removed?”

For calculation-heavy courses, practise the decision process

Students sometimes focus on memorising formulas when the real difficulty is deciding which formula or method applies.

For every calculation question, practise identifying:

  1. What information is given?
  2. What is being requested?
  3. Which concept is being tested?
  4. Which method could solve it?
  5. What assumptions apply?
  6. How can the answer be checked?

The decision before the calculation is often where the real learning occurs.

Keep an error log

Every time you make a meaningful mistake, record it.

Your log might contain:

Question: Calculate X.

Mistake: Used the wrong equation.

Why: I did not identify the variable being asked for.

Correction: Read the final sentence before selecting a formula.

After several sessions, patterns appear.

If the same mistake occurs repeatedly, that is a study priority.

Do not copy solutions too quickly

When you get stuck, it is tempting to look at the worked solution immediately.

Try a structured struggle first.

Give yourself several minutes to:

  • restate the question;
  • list known information;

  • write relevant formulas;
  • identify what you do not know;
  • attempt one possible method.

Use past questions strategically

Past examination questions can reveal the style and level of assessment, but they should not become an exercise in memorising answer patterns.

Sort them by topic.

Then attempt unfamiliar questions without checking the topic label first.

This forces you to recognise which concept is relevant.

After each session, identify:

  • questions you solved confidently;
  • questions where your method was correct but execution failed;
  • questions where you chose the wrong method;

Build a weekly difficult-course block

Do not wait until examination season.

Reserve recurring time for the hardest course.

For example:

Tuesday: 60 minutes learning.

Thursday: 60 minutes practice.

Saturday: 90 minutes mixed questions and error review.

The schedule can be different for your circumstances. Consistency matters more than copying someone else's timetable.

Combine difficulty with recovery

A difficult subject requires concentration. Do not automatically schedule it after a long day when you are already exhausted.

If possible, place demanding work during the period when your concentration is strongest.

You can use easier tasks during lower-energy periods, such as organising notes or reviewing flashcards.

Know when to change your method

Another student may understand the topic faster. That does not tell you how quickly you can learn it.

Compare your current performance with your previous performance.

Can you solve a question today that you could not solve last week?

Can you explain a concept more clearly?

Are you making fewer mistakes?

Those are meaningful indicators of progress.

A practical seven-day reset

If a difficult course has become overwhelming, try a short reset.

Day 1: Map the syllabus and identify weak foundations.

Day 2: Repair the most important missing foundation.

Day 3: Learn one major topic and retrieve it from memory.

Day 4: Practise questions from that topic.

Day 5: Review mistakes and attempt modified questions.

Day 6: Mix questions from several topics.

Day 7: Take a short self-test without notes.

The purpose is not to master an entire course in one week. It is to replace vague anxiety with measurable progress.

Final thoughts

A difficult university course does not become easier because you stare at it longer. It becomes more manageable when you identify the exact problem, repair missing foundations, practise retrieval, solve unfamiliar questions, track mistakes, and ask focused questions when you need help.

Give difficult subjects regular attention instead of emergency attention. Over time, the course that once looked impossible can become a collection of smaller problems that you know how to approach.
